Grey County runs from the Georgian Bay shore south across the Niagara Escarpment and out into farmland, about 4,500 square kilometres holding roughly 101,000 people at the 2021 census. It became a county in its own right in 1854 when the united counties it had been created inside were dissolved, and its present nine municipalities date from the restructuring of 2001, with the county seat at Owen Sound. The Beaver River cuts north through the middle of the escarpment and meets the bay at Thornbury, which is where this business is run from.
Being inside the boundary rather than beside it changes what this page is allowed to say, in both directions. The escarpment end is home ground: the Beaver Valley, the shore running west through Meaford, the orchards and the ski country stacked on the slope behind them, and four towns in that corner already have pages of their own here. This county gets serious lake-effect snow, which is exactly why the ski country here photographs best in the same weeks the back concessions are least dependable. A winter date is set with a fallback in mind, and the near end of the county has an advantage in that the drive is short enough to move a shoot by a day without anyone paying twice for travel.
