Drone and aerial photography in Thornbury

Most work here starts in the air. Drone photography over Thornbury is the only way to get the harbour, a village lot, the orchard rows and the escarpment behind them into one frame, and on the acreage above town it is the difference between a photograph of a house and a photograph of a property.

The town gives an aerial set things to point at. The Beaver River comes down the valley and meets Georgian Bay at the harbour, with the fish ladder at the mouth. The orchards climb the valley behind town in rows that read as rows only from above. Both are recognisable from the air and neither survives a photograph taken at eye level.

A village lot is flown differently from acreage, and the difference is altitude. On a tight lot near Bruce Street the useful frame is low and close, angled back toward the water, because what is being sold is the walk rather than the land. Go too high and the property disappears into a roofscape. On the orchard acreage above town the opposite is true: the frame has to get high enough to hold the whole parcel, the rows and the valley wall in one shot, and anything lower than that just photographs some trees.

The east end is a third case again. Lora Bay is a golf community, so a house there is priced partly on what it backs onto, and the only honest way to show which hole and how close is from above. A ground-level photograph of a back garden with grass beyond it proves nothing at all.

Living in the village changes the economics of a reflight more than it changes the price of the first one. Georgian Bay weather turns a booked golden hour into flat grey often enough that it has to be planned for, and when the shoot is a ten-minute drive rather than an hour each way, going back a second evening is a scheduling question rather than a second call-out.

The businesses under those flight paths book the camera for their own reasons, and they are small ones: the shops along Bruce Street, the operators working the harbour, the orchards that sell what they grow at the gate.
