Wasaga Beach Provincial Park drew 1,693,731 visitors in 2022, more than any other operating provincial park in Ontario.

Wasaga Beach Provincial Park drew 1,693,731 visitors in 2022, more than any other operating provincial park in Ontario. Every seasonal business along Mosley Street and Beach Drive is competing for a share of that number, and most of them are competing with photographs.

The work is seasonal by nature. Campaign imagery has to be shot early enough to be usable for the season it advertises, which in practice means the previous one. Shoreline and event photography works best while the beach is actually full, because an empty beach sells a quiet holiday and a busy one sells a destination. Accommodation and rental marketing needs the walk to the water shown rather than described.

Tourism and commercial photography in Wasaga Beach covers how those are scoped and quoted.

A busy beach is the asset and it is also the reason the work needs planning. The frames that sell a destination are the ones with people in them, which is a different shoot from an empty-premises exterior: it wants a chosen day and a chosen hour, and it wants the operator to know in advance which they are, because the difference between a Tuesday morning in June and a Saturday afternoon in July is the entire photograph.

The compressed season is the hard commercial fact here. A business with a genuinely busy twelve or fourteen weeks has that long to make the images that will sell the following year, and once the beach empties the opportunity is gone until the next one. Booking inside the season, for the season after, is the only arrangement that works — and it is the opposite of how most operators think about it, because they are busiest exactly when the shoot needs to happen.

Accommodation marketing has a specific requirement that gets missed: the walk. A motel or a rental two streets back can compete perfectly well with one on the front if the route to the sand is shown honestly and looks short. Describing it never does that. An aerial that traces it does, and for the operators who are not on the beachfront it is the single most valuable frame in the set.

Nothing explains this town from ground level, because the thing it sells is fourteen kilometres long and flat. Drone and aerial photography in Wasaga Beach covers the flights that put the beach, the water and a business's distance from both into a single frame a visitor can read in one go.

Questions

Asked about this work in Wasaga Beach.

Should there be people in the photographs?
For anything selling a visit, yes, and that makes it a different shoot. Frames that sell a destination need a chosen day, decent weather and a plan for who is in them, which is not the same as an exterior taken on a quiet Tuesday. It is worth booking a date that is likely to be busy rather than one that is convenient.
How long is the window to make a season's images?
Twelve or fourteen weeks, and then it is gone. A business with a genuinely busy summer has that long to make the pictures that will sell next summer, so the shoot has to happen while everyone is at their busiest. Once the beach empties there is no version of the town that photographs like July.
Can the beach itself be used in a business's photography?
Within what the park allows on the ground, and with the flight planned around people rather than through them. In practice the strongest frames tend to be the ones taken from the business toward the water, which show what a guest actually gets, rather than a stock view of sand that could be any beach in the province.
