The geography is worth understanding before the flight is planned. The beach runs fourteen kilometres along Nottawasaga Bay and is divided into six beach areas, with the Nottawasaga River forming the western end of town and looping back behind the shoreline. Where a property sits along that fourteen kilometres, which beach area it belongs to, which side of the river it is on and how many streets back it stands, all change what the aerial has to prove.

"How far to the water" is not one question, and the aerial has to answer the version the buyer is actually asking. Distance in metres is the easy part. What they usually want to know is whether the walk crosses a road, whether it is sand the whole way or a paved lane, and what stands between the property and the shore — and those are answered by the angle the flight is planned on, not by altitude alone.
The river is the most under-appreciated feature in town and it is worth a frame of its own. The Nottawasaga loops back behind the shoreline, which means a good number of properties have water on a side nobody thinks to photograph, and some have it on two. From the street that is invisible; from above it is obvious and it is a selling point.
The town's geography also makes seasonal timing unusually stark. The same stretch of shore in February and in July is not recognisably the same place, and which one a set should show depends entirely on what is being sold — a year-round home is not helped by an empty grey beach, and a summer rental is not helped by ice.
The operators working that shoreline through the summer need their images made a season before the one they are advertising, which makes this a calendar problem as much as a photographic one. - By flying the walk rather than quoting the metres. What a buyer or a renter wants to know is whether it crosses a road, whether it is sand the whole way and what is between the door and the beach. A frame that follows that route answers all three at once, which a number in a listing description never does.
- Is the river worth a frame of its own?
- It is the most overlooked feature in town. The Nottawasaga loops back behind the shoreline, so a good number of properties have water on a side nobody thinks to photograph. On those addresses one frame of the river side is often the difference between a property that reads as near the beach and one that reads as on the water.
- Can the drone fly with people on the beach below?
- Not close to them. The aircraft has to stay more than thirty metres horizontally from anyone not part of the flight, which on a busy stretch of sand rules out most of the day rather than most of the year. Early morning solves it, and it is also when the shoreline photographs best.
